I think there are a variety of bizarre "coincidences" regarding gas price trends. Prices in Illinois have seemed to peak around holiday time and now Spring time (periods where travel rates are higher). I notice many increases take place just before the weekends as well. The price-gouging is brutally obvious as any excuses are used (Middle East, post-9/11, supply/demand, etc). I worry the high-profile nature of this problem may cause potential terrorists to try and strike a target in the U.S. or abroad to weaken the fuel supply and possibly drive up prices even higher. I feel sorry for younger workers who want to try and take a trip somewhere. These prices should cause people to re-think the necessity of trips taken.
I always seem to need gas just after a price increase. I know people get upset at the oil companies, but the amount of profit the oil companies make on a gallon of gasoline is considerably less than the amount of taxes that are placed on the gallon of gasoline.
I think the gas prices have been high for way too long. There is always an increase right before a long holiday weekend before lots of people are traveling. Someone is getting very wealthy at the expense of hard working Americans.
